Mental Rebuild Lab

Recovery tools that hold up on a bad day.

Workbooks and guides for the person doing the work and the family standing next to them — and the operating plans, resident documents and programming for the houses they live in. Written by one person who has been on both sides of that desk.

I'm in recovery, or someone I love is

Operating plans and resident documents

Real estate people teach you how to open the house. Nobody teaches you what happens inside it. This is that half.

For the person doing the work

Nobody hands you a plan on the way out the door.

You leave treatment with a phone number and a lot of time. These are the things I needed in that stretch and could not find anywhere — written plainly, printable, and built to be used on the day you least feel like using them.

For sober living house operators

Real estate people teach you how to open the house.

Nobody teaches you what happens inside it.

They will teach you how to find the property, structure the entity, price a bed and fill it. That is real knowledge and you need it. This is the other half — the decisions that determine whether the people living in your house stay sober, which is what determines whether your beds stay full.

House Meeting Kit: 5 Myths That Keep Families Stuck

A meeting you can actually run for residents' families.

Read it free

A bed and a curfew is not a programme.

These are the eleven. None of them change at a state line.

  1. Who manages the house, and how much recovery do they have?
  2. Are you a MAT-friendly house?
  3. How many residents will you house?
  4. What recovery work will residents do while they live there?
  5. What professional network can residents tap into?
  6. Which meetings, and can sponsors come to the house?
  7. Can residents get to work, food and clothing from your address?
  8. Who is allowed to visit, and where do they sit?
  9. Can residents leave for things other than work?
  10. Will you run outings?
  11. Can residents have a vehicle — and can they drive other residents?

Your licensing rules change at a state line. These don't.

How many people sleep in a room, whether a sponsor can sit down in your front room, and whether a resident can reach a job without a car are the same questions in all fifty states.

About the money, since most people are not straight about it.

You should expect to make a profit. A house that does not make money closes, and a closed house helps nobody. But the order matters and almost everyone gets it backwards. It starts with helping residents stay sober. If they stay sober they stay housed, they pay rent, your treatment centres keep referring, and your beds stay full.

Recovery outcomes are not the soft part of this business. They are the business.

Who wrote all of this

I am Mike Drake.

I worked as a case manager at a treatment center placing clients into housing, and I have lived in a sober living house as a resident. I am in recovery myself.

Lived experience tells you how a resident thinks at two in the morning — what they will tell you and what they will never say out loud. The training tells you what to do about it. Both of those are in every page of this.

I also came out of treatment with nothing. No money, no job, no car, no clothes. I was homeless when I went in. Roughly three out of four people leaving treatment are in the same position — and if your house is designed for somebody with a car and a bank balance, it is designed for a resident who is not coming.

Be clear about this before you buy anything

What this is not.

Not ready to buy anything

Twenty minutes, free, no pitch.

Tell me where you are and I'll tell you what I'd do first — even if the answer is that you don't need me yet.

I'd rather you ran a good house than bought the wrong thing from me.
